What should I do to prepare for tattoo removal?

All laser tattoo removal clinics have slightly different preparation instructions. At Dr. Ink Eraser, we take a minimalistic approach to laser tattoo removal preparation. Here are our requirements for preparing for laser tattoo removal:

  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and spray tans
  • Wear sunscreen at least 4 weeks prior to the appointment (do not apply sunscreen on any the day of the appointment)
  • Keep the tattooed area dry, clean, and clear
  • Do not apply perfume, moisturizing lotion, or other cosmetics to the area that will be treated
  • For tattoos less than 6 months old, let the inked skin scab over if possible โ€” dry, flaky ink is easier to remove
  • Don’t show up with an empty stomach; drink water and eat a meal before the appointment

How can I prepare for pain or discomfort during a tattoo removal session?

There are multiple pain relief options you can use 2 hours before your appointment, including:

  • numbing cream: liberally apply the numbing cream to your tattoo and cover it up in cellophane or saran wrap
  • Tylenol (acetaminophen)
  • Advil (ibuprofen)

Regarding over-the-counter pain relief medications, do not take any medications that contain aspirin. Aspirin is a blood thinner. It makes you more susceptible to bleeding and bruising, which can add more discomfort to the laser removal procedure and defeats the purpose of taking pain relief medication in the first place.

Should I shave before tattoo removal?

Yes, please shave the tattooed area the day before your appointment. Shaving on the same day as the appointment session can result in increased sensitivity due to the pores being open. Shaving the day before ensures the pores are closed. You also don’t want to deal with the burned hair smell that accompanies an unshaven area affected by a tattoo removal laser.

What should I wear to get a tattoo removed?

Wear something that is loose-fitting, breathable, and comfortable. We recommend wearing clothes that do not touch the affected area. This isn’t always possible, so at least make sure you have clothing that can be easily removed without grazing or scratching the skin following treatment.

Can I drink coffee for tattoo removal?

If coffee is part of your morning routine, you will want to cut it out at least 24 hours prior to your laser tattoo removal appointment. Caffeine can make your skin more susceptible to pain. That said, there are other items that contain enough caffeine to affect your treatments. Avoid consuming the following items at least 24 hours prior to your treatment session:

  • Coffee
  • Decaf coffee
  • Hot tea
  • Iced tea
  • Hot chocolate
  • Soft drinks like pop and soda
  • Energy drinks
  • Weight loss pills
  • Soft drinks (i.e., pops and sodas)
  • Chocolate candy
  • Certain ice creams, yogurts, puddings, and cookies
  • Protein bars
