Tattoos and the immune system
The immune system plays an important role not only in getting a tattoo but in laser tattoo removal as well.
The immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs in the body that is tasked with preventing, detecting, fighting off, and removing foreign invaders, such as germs, viruses, infections, and bad bacteria. It also plays a role in helping the body heal when it is injured.
White blood cells, or leukocytes, do the heavy lifting work of attacking and removing the foreign invaders from the body. There’s a specific type of white blood cell that does this: the phagocyte.
Phagocytes work to destroy and remove the invaders by eating up things that don’t belong. For example, tattoo ink particles. The reason your tattoo is visible is because the ink particles are too large for phagocytes to remove.
So when tattoo ink is injected into your skin, the white blood cells will try to remove it, which is why it’s common for a new tattoo to be raised or become itchy from time to time. That’s the phagocytes at work, trying (and failing) to remove the tattoo.
Laser tattoo removal shatters the ink particles into smaller fragments that allows the phagocytes to do their job effectively. But a compromised immune system can negatively impact the laser tattoo removal results.
Thankfully, there are ways to give your immune system so you can successfully get your unwanted tattoo removed.
Ways to boost your immune system for the best laser tattoo removal results
Staying hydrated can really make a big difference on your immune system, and a good difference at that. Drinking water helps flush out toxins and helps the cells in your body to get more oxygen to function at peak performance. Drinking water before your laser tattoo removal success can result in a faster recovery period.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet
There are plenty of foods that can give your immune system some extra assistance. Look for foods that are high in Vitamins A, B, C, and E. This often means adding more fruits and leafy greens to your diet while scaling back on starchy, sugary, and processed foods.
Exercise regularly and in moderation
Exercising too little or too much can stress your immune system, which is not something you want with an upcoming laser tattoo removal session. Exercise strengthens more than just your muscle — it trans your body to avoid illnesses. It also increases blood flow throughout the body, which makes it easier for the white blood cells to attack those ink particles.
Get a full night’s sleep
Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night reduces stress and repairs tissue overnight, keeping your body, and immune system by extension, well-rested and ready to go.
Don’t smoke or vape
Smoking — and yes, vaping — has adverse effects on your immune system. Your immune system has to repair the damage it causes to your lungs instead of focusing on attacking the ink particles.
Cut back on drinking
Drinking alcoholic beverages may seem like a good way to kick back and relax, but it’s not. While it may not seem as bad as smoking or vaping, it still causes your body to slow down white blood cell production and can cause liver damage.
Ideally, you should not be drinking while preparing for laser tattoo removal, but if you cannot give it up entirely, cut back on how much you drink.
Reschedule the laser tattoo removal appointment if you’re sick
If you’re not feeling well before a laser tattoo removal appointment, call the place where you’re going to be getting the removal done. You should be going to the appointment feeling your best, not when your immune system is compromised because it’s fighting off a virus.
